Managing construction for owners who build in some of the world’s most fabulous places.

McDonald Horton specializes in residential construction management. We manage the construction team, budgets, schedule, quality control and the information flow. As the Owner's Representative, we project the owner's presence onto the job site no matter how far afield the location may be. As one of our clients is fond of saying "the crop grows best when the shadow of the farmer is upon the land".

Project Profiles

What We Value
“The Nantucket project has been run in a highly efficient manner. The design development and construction drawings on this project were easily two months ahead of the curve due to the information flow Don Horton coordinated and managed.  The result was a project that was completed on schedule and within budget.” - Architect

"Thank you for standing by me, for helping me when I got myself into trouble and for getting me out of trouble. In the end, I am proud of the home we all built. We did things right. You should take a bow for your many contributions to this long and arduous project. Thank you for all your efforts.” - Owner

“Don established himself as a partner in the pre-construction process, contributing his experience and expertise to the project and to creatively solve problems when the need arose. His involvement helped shepherd planning and design to deliver a plan that could be permitted and establish a budget that would provide maximum value to the Owner. Perhaps a core competency of an Owner’s Representative, but the dynamic of this Owner and Design Team made this a yeoman’s task. The project and process were better served because of Don’s efforts – he definitely has a value-added approach.” - Contractor

Communication.

Included in this process is a weekly status brief complete with photographs and comments regarding the progress of the project and any critical path decisions that need to be made. For some projects, the owner prefers a status brief as it drills down to only those issues that are of immediate concern to him or require his direct input and provides a snap shot of where the project is at the time.

Team Building.

Starting in pre-construction, we assign accountabilities for all aspects of the project and control the agenda in our weekly construction meetings and the keeping of construction meeting minutes. We have a weekly construction meeting via conference call with the architect, general contractor and any relevant consultants that have something to present to the team.

Oversight.

We review the construction progress, check on the quality of the work and brainstorm with the team on identifying critical path decisions and scheduling constraints. In addition to our visits, we often hire a local assistant project manager to visit the job site a couple of times a week, take photos and report on the progress relative to the construction schedule.

Administration.

We solicit and review all estimates, proposals, contracts and agreements. We review all hard and soft invoices for approval. We maintain all-inclusive budgets and construction schedules. At the conclusion of the project, we will provide punch list coordination and review all closeout documents to complete the project.
